Difference Between Vertical Mill and Ball MillPosted: 2016-11-29

  • Vertical mill mainly applied to powder processing of non-flammable and explosive brittle materials with medium, low hardness, Mohs hardness of 6. Ball mill is key grinding equipment afer materials are crushed. Vertical grinding is a "grinding bed" grinding equipment, and ball mill is "single-particle grinding" grinding equipment. They are very different in following aspects:

    1.energy consumption of ball mill is low, it's a trend that it will be replaced by vertical mill machine, roller mill. However, ball mill has features that spherical shape of particles, is conducive to raw material calcination and hydration of cement hardening. This is why we choose ball mill for clinker grinding.

    2.grinding method of the vertical mill is reasonable, grinding power are fully utilized by materials, and grading is in time to avoid the phenomenon of over-grinding materials. So it has high grinding efficiency, low power consumption (saving more than 20% than the ball mill)

    3.vertical mill allows more wind through than ball mill. This increases the contact area of ??the material with the airflow, the heat exchange condition is good, so the drying efficiency is high.

    4.occupied area of vertical mill is 50% to 70% of the ball mill.

    5.lower initial cost. The cost of the initial installation, running costs and maintenance costs of vertical mill is only 70% to 80% of ball mill equipment.

    6.vertical mill's input size of material is larger than ball mill. Ball mill is limited by its maximum ball diameter, can be only entered the smaller raw materials.

    7.adjustment of the product fineness is convenient, particle size distribution is uniform, and chemical composition is stability.

    Ball mill

    8.with less dust, noise, vertical mill is conducive to environmental protection. There is no grinding between the body and the impact between the liner in grinding operation of vertical mill, so the noise is low. Pipe system is relatively simple, and is well sealed, mostly negative pressure operation, so it has less dust.

    9.vertical mill has a short conversion time. Different raw materials can be changed in a very short period of time to produce different products(Ball mill is the opposite).

    10.vertical mill has lower wear. There is no direct contact between the metal in operation, so the metal consumption is small.

    11.vertical roller mill has simple process, vertical installation of equipment. Material grinding, drying and grading is at the same time, so it has small footprint, low probability of failure, saving money.

    Vertical mill is not suitable for grinding hard and abrasive materials, because of shorter life and more frequently maintenance, and its wear parts is more expensive than the ball mill. Compared with ball mill, it still has features of maintain simple, easy and small workload.

    The above is the main difference between vertical mill and ball mill. When you choose grinding mill, you must according to your specific material and yield required.
